Creating Itineraries

Some visitors may be interested in visiting Thanet because of an attraction, restaurant or hotel, but it is what is on offer for the whole area that will motivate them to come to stay.

It is this holistic experience that will affect what they think about a place, whether they will come back or recommend it to others.

Highlighting what there is to see and do in Thanet will help you attract customers, and ensure you will provide them with a good service. Use the Shared Story to highlight what is special and unique about the area.

And why not have a go at itinerary building - it can be fun. Start off by thinking about your target audience – are they families, young couples or empty nesters. Think about what they might be interested in and then, using your local knowledge, put forward suggestions that would inspire and delight your visitor. Think about the types of questions you get asked and can you weave these into the itinerary For example:

For families, list 5 things to do that are:

  • Entertaining for kids
  • Free or good if on a budget
  • Good for a rainy day

For young professionals, list 5 things to do that are:

  • Cultural - artistic, historical
  • Hidden, quirky or different - off the beaten track
  • Foodie, gourmet or local produce

For active retirees, list 5 places in the area that are:

  • Good for walking or cycling
  • Heritage
  • Independent shopping

Or you could take a thematic approach by listing, for example, the top best places for:

  • Seeing the sunset
  • Getting fit and active
  • Inspiring creativity
  • Luxury treats
  • Room with a view
  • Taking the dog
  • Fine dining

Or maybe think about making suggestions depending on the time visitors have – so half a day in your town, a whole day in Thanet, 48 hours in East Kent. Think about some of the things you like doing in the area

Anniversaries or national stories are also good hooks to generate interest in an area, and around which to build an itinerary. It could be a national event, a date in history, a sporting event
